The Provocative Change Works Association

The global hub for Provocative Change Works training, practitioner development, certification standards, and continued professional learning.

What Is PCW?

Provocative Change Works, often shortened to PCW, is a multidimensional conversational approach to personal change. It uses direct, responsive, and often provocative dialogue to help clients interrupt unhelpful patterns, access new perspectives, and reclaim their own capacity for change.

Rather than relying on rigid scripts, PCW works through live interaction. The practitioner may challenge, exaggerate, reframe, question, disrupt, or redirect the client’s thinking in order to create movement where the person has previously felt stuck.

Core Elements of PCW

Conversational Stances

PCW includes 40 distinct provocative stances that help practitioners challenge unhelpful patterns and rigid thinking through flexible, natural dialogue.

Hypnosis and Provocation

The model integrates hypnotic elements, provocation, voice tempo, and state change work so that conversations can become more than ordinary discussion.

Improvisation and Feedback

PCW places strong emphasis on improvisational skill, client feedback, recorded practice, session structure, and practical application in real-life contexts.

PCW Training and Practitioner Opportunities

The Association maintains rigorous standards for PCW certification. Whether someone is a coach, therapist, corporate trainer, or change-work professional, the certification structure is designed to support ethical, effective, and practical use of the PCW model.

The pathways below distinguish between introductory attendance-based certification, practitioner-level certification, advanced practitioner evaluation, and trainer certification.

Intro

Foundations-Level Certification

An introduction to the PCW model and its core elements.

Foundations-level certification gives students an opportunity to explore the core elements of PCW. This is an attendance-based certification and should not be confused with official PCW Practitioner certification.

Level 1

PCW Practitioner Certification

For people who want to use the PCW model with clients in coaching, therapy, business, or personal change.

PCW Practitioner certification is designed for individuals who want to work directly with clients using the PCW model. Previously, this certification was granted only after ten days of live training and the successful presentation of client case studies.

Material and skills covered at this level include:

  • Awareness of core provocative exercises and the ability to incorporate exercises with icon cards.
  • Using nonverbal skills to assist in changing states.
  • Demonstrating the integration of hypnosis and provocation elements with ease.
  • Improvising and grasping key improvisational skills in client sessions.
  • Identifying “the ingredients that make the problem, the problem.”
  • Using provocative stances with ease and understanding their implications.
  • Identifying drivers for behaviour and recognising problem patterns in clients.
  • Submitting a PCW client session on video demonstrating 15 stances, direct, indirect, and random approaches, voice tempo, and arm relaxation elements.
  • Structuring client sessions from initial contact to follow-up and learning the best use of client notes.
Level 2

Advanced PCW Practitioner Certification

A higher skill level for those who have completed practitioner-level training.

Advanced PCW Practitioner certification is awarded to individuals who have completed practitioner-level training. Evaluation includes submitting examples of client sessions and demonstrating a deeper ability to deconstruct client work.

This level includes:

  • Deconstructing client problems and offering multiple solutions using different aspects of the PCW model.
  • Awareness of PCW waltz time sequences in client sessions.
  • Eliciting and challenging client metaphors to assist effective change.
  • Using Human Alchemy sound combinations to affect client change.
  • Advanced hypnosis and catch-all patterns in client work.
  • Advanced fractionation and metaphor work with clients.
  • Submitting four or more client cases for live evaluation and deconstruction.
  • Demonstrating and understanding psychoeducation in a conversational manner.
  • Completing an agreed 12-month project using PCW skills for evaluation.
Level 3

PCW Trainer Certification

For experienced practitioners who meet the standards required to teach and represent PCW training.

PCW Trainer Certification is designed to maintain quality control and ensure that trainers remain actively involved in the model rather than holding certification in name only.

Current trainer requirements include:

  • Awareness of the PCW model at practitioner and advanced practitioner levels.
  • The ability to demonstrate and communicate all aspects of the PCW model at practitioner level.
  • Working ethically with proper duty of care toward others.
  • Regular CPD to maintain professional skills.
  • Running PCW introductory and practitioner-level trainings live and/or online within each 18-month period.
  • Being part of the PCW trainer group that reviews and refines the model.
  • Training groups for practitioner certification having a minimum of eight attendees.
  • Trainees completing the full allocated training time, not simply receiving recordings of live trainings.
  • Trainer certifications being granted on a three-year renewable basis.
  • Submitting a video of a one-day training for evaluation.
